Family News

Things:

1. Baseball season is almost over.

2. Timothy is home for a month from the Navy

3. Nicholas is working in NJ for 4 months. I will write sometime about the pain of letting a child go. He took his vehicle.

4. Dh gave up his lawn business in order to spend more time with his family. BIG DECISION on his part.

5. Tim and I began watching the first season of 24. Major mistake and major committment. We are hooked. We have been missing our early curfew these days: “Wanna watch one more episode?” If you plan on watching 24 it would be better not to look around the website too much.

6. We got a new washer and dryer: Kenmore Elites series 3 & 4. We filed for a $500 rebate for our old Neptunes. There was a lawsuit.

7. I had a blast in Ft Lauderdale with Nicholas and Emily. I have a tan.

8. I bought the the Veritas 7th grade Omnibus. It went like this. Look at catalog. listen to reviews. Look at checkbook. Sigh. Call dh at work. Timidly ask. A big yes and a big purchase. Waiting.

9. James and Nathaniel went to the Homeschool World Series in Atlanta, where they were eliminated. I do not say lost because they didn’t lose. They were eliminated in the most frustrating way by a run count. Apparently homeschoolers need a lesson in logic: How to set up a double elimination tournament.

10. There is no joy in Mudville. I try and cheer them up. They refuse to be comforted. Better luck next time. In our school all the girls are pretty and all the boys winners. Tongue firmly in cheek.

11. Timothy is setting up a physical training program for his siblings while he is home. Some siblings are not happy.

12. We may finish school by June 15. I am busy planning next year’s booklists. My rising senior explains that most seniors have an easier year and will I take that into consideration. Yes, I reply with an evil grin.

For those of you who like keeping up with personal details, this post is for you.

Baseball season is over as of last night. Benjamin was the last man standing having stayed in the tournament for 4 games. Sad thing about baseball season, you either win the whole tournament or your last game is a loss. Everyone had a great year with great Christian coaches. We have opted out of All-Stars this year, too much travelling for our beat up old vehicles.

James and Nathaniel are still playing summer ball with a little local team.

Nicholas got great unexpected news. During our trip to Ft Lauderdale, he passed his oral interview and was told he was the youngest candidate to pass. Still he was pretty low on the list and they thought they might not get to him for the job. Yesterday he got a call saying he was still in the running so he is on his way back down to Ft Lauderdale for further testing. Please pray for Nicholas. He is very single-minded in his desire to become a police officer.

We still have 6 days left to complete our 180 school days and I am working on everyones’ reading list for next year. Today we will complete another school day by watching Leonard Bernstein DVD’s and reading. It is a rainy day and it looks like Arlene might drop a bucket of water on us also.

Finally, we appear to have a few members with strep throat including Nicholas far away in NJ. It has been a while since we were ‘really’ sick. My dh pulled out the Children’s Tylenol last night. Of course it is the weekend so we will probably be all better by Monday when the Dr.’s office across the field opens.

Update on Nicholas:

Today Nicholas will spend all day in Miami having a psychological exam.
Please pray for him. And go ahead and pray for me…for some reason I am more nervous than Nicholas.
Also if you know anyone in the Ft Lauderdale area who could help us out with area information please email me at dominionfamily at gmail dot com.
We are especially hoping to find a Christian family or older couple/widow who would be willing to rent a room to a young, Christian Ft Lauderdale police officer.

Have you seen THIS webpage?
Faithful readers will remember that I am always on the prowl for something to help me get supper on the table every once in a while. I am terribly impressed with these meal plans. I like them much better than the menu-mailer I subscribed to last Autumn.

BTW, have you seen the PCA GA blog? HERE is an especially exciting entry.

And finally, little children are so impressionable. Even after 9 children I am constantly amazed at what the little ones imitate. Yesterday Alex got all dressed up in a real suit/tie, nice shoes, the whole shebang. Why? Well, we have been watching the British show Yes, Minister.
We all cooperated with Alex by saying, “Yes, Minister,” whenever he added anything to the conversation.

Nicholas got word today that he passed the psychological exam. After his background check is complete he will be given a job start date. He wanted me to let some of you know that you may get a phone call during the background check.

I am making a quick trip home from the hospital. Christopher was bitten by a bug last night and ended up with a staph infection. He will be in the hospital for at least 2 days and we are hoping he doesn’t get worse and the antibiotics work. Thank-you for your prayers

Saturday Tim and I will be leaving on our 25th anniversary trip. We can count on one hand the times we have traveled away from the children and that includes hospital stays. I guess most couples celebrating their 25th anniversary don’t need babysitting but my parents have kindly agreed to stay with the children so we can get away for almost a whole week.

I scanned the above picture from our wedding album. Not only is our scanner a mess but our photo editing software won’t accept the picture so here it is as it scanned.

Having just waxed sentimental about my son’s 21st birthday this blog would be entirely too mushy if I began gushing about my marriage. Suffice it to say that we were very young when we married (18,19), totally broke & extremely naive but we still, after 25 years, think young marriage is a great idea for Christian young people. So there !!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!

We are getting ready to walk out the door and EGEATP. The only glitch is that our truck broke down totally and we had to rent a car for the trip. At the car counter, the lady asked me if I wanted to upgrade the car for a few dollars and since Tim is tall and it is our anniversary I said yes. When I got to the car I was shocked. It has bling-bling* and anyone who knows Tim knows he doesn’t have bling-bling. He was not happy about the bright purple car. I am kinda excited about it, when we get to where we are going people will probably think I am a celebrity or something.

*I just heard this word last week. And for some reason I love it. I wish I had coined it myself. Apparently it refers to all the accoutrements of a hip-hop lifestyle: big diamonds, fancy stuff, clothes, cars etc. Maybe we could hijack it to mean jumpers and white tennis shoes.

See you next week, Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.

PS I may still be blogging from a secret location. Maybe.

I didn’t get to do the audioblogging I was hoping to do while away. I was just too lazy to figure it out. I did want y’all to get a chance to hear the roaring creek roaring into the phone. We spent 5 days in the Smoky Mountains. It was a little too hot for too much hiking but we drove around and got out sometimes.

We spent some quality time discussing the introduction to I’ll Take My Stand. This book is going to take us a long….time to get through, but reading it in the Smoky Mountains was perfect. The whole history of the area, the national park, the moving people off of their lands, the vacationing Americans, the vanishing southern traditions….perfect for contemplation.

The Bling came in handy, too. It was easy to find in any parking lot. The only real worry was that some TN sheriff might give us a ticket on account of the color. We even did the tourist thing and bought a few Dixie Outfitters t-shirts from an Arab? We embarrassed ourselves at a dinner show where my dh refused to stand during a flag raising because they were singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic. That man needs a lesson in humoring Yahoos, I guess.

My parents seemed to survive their week with the children. We give them a big, public thank-you for that bit of babysitting. They did all kinds of fun, expensive things with the children and the house was even cleaner than when we left.

All in all it was a lot of fun except that Tim kept saying, “I wish the kids were here.”
