A few weeks ago I got a call from one of my sons. He and his wife were attending the wedding of an old family friend. He was terribly excited. I wouldn’t believe who was singing at the wedding. My mind raced Andrea Boccelli, Tony Bennett, Bono? It must be someone very famous indeed. Who? Who? Judy Rogers!!!!.
I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. During his formative years we owned 9 of the ‘tapes’ listed on this page. I once bought the music for Why Can’t I See God so that I could do a children’s program even though my musical knowledge and ability is zip.
The designated husband used to sing. Some people said he sounded just like Mylon. Isn’t that cool? For a tiny bit of time he sang in churches with the children. Listen My Son by Judy Rogers was one of their staple songs.
Which reminds me of a story. The boys used to wear matching clothes when we traveled. On our way to Savannah once we stopped near Darlington for the night. It wasn’t too near Darlington because the race was the next day and the motels were packed. As we got out of the van a woman asked the boys if they were singing the next day. “Yes,” they answered because they were singing in their grandpa’s little country church Sunday morning. The lady nudged her husband and said, “I knew it!!” This rather humiliated the older boys who were at that time bitter about the matching outfits.
My all-time favorite Judy Rogers CD is Pilgrim’s Praise with Craig Pitman. That is probably on my all-time favorite top ten. Why hasn’t Craig Pitman ever done anything else? That guy is better than Billy Joel.
I also love Judy’s hymn selections in the CD she did with her sister Becky. They made the old hymns come alive for me. We still sing a few of their versions in MT instead of the regular versions and we also have Coram Deo in our MT rotation.
Judy has been a special gift from God to the Reformed community. She hasn’t become rich and famous but she has been a big blessing to many families and for many of us she has become a part of our family culture. I can’t tell you how many times I sing, “There are 6 things even 7……and the one who causes trouble with his brooootherrrrr” in particular circumstances involving troublemakers and brothers.
While I am promoting Reformed artists I want to tell you about a new work. Bob Smith and his wife Evy attend our church and they are working on music that is distinctly Reformed. This music is not for children but it is sophisticated music with a uniquely Reformed perspective. They are hoping that it may even be evangelistic. Evy is bubbling over with joy of great theology. They don’t look like it but they have 4 grown children, I think! I am not sure where they are going with their music but keep an eye on them and don’t miss listening to the tracks on their website like this one.
Any other music selections with a Reformed distinctive?

Just listened to those Becky/Judy hymns this morning during my QT.
Judy is gearing up for a new CD entitled Blessed: It is The Beatitudes in Song.
And I agree about Pilgrim’s Praise being wonderful…. I wonder where Craig is singing now. He lives in my county

I was at a book club meeting in Decatur, AL once and the ladies said he used to live there.

I love those Judy Rogers songs, too. We were noticing recently how beautifully Becky and Judy harmonize together because they are sisters. Two of my girls are singing together, harmonizing soprano and alto, and there is something special about the sound of sisters singing together. (I think all of Judy’s music is downloadable at Behemoth.com, too, which is nice because then you can pick which songs you want.)
BTW, I *never* made my boys dress alike :-). But I did used to make matching pajamas every year for Christmas, and I did sew some matching outfits for the three girls when they were little. That is a tradition I was happy to give up! We’ll see what happens some day when I get to be a grandma.

Try ‘Celtic Cry’, Cindy. It is definitely reformed and each song is based on the life of one of the Scottish Covenanters. Excellent music.
I occasionally dressed my boys alike, but sometimes they accidentally come out ‘matching’ these days (but they go change quickly). They have worn the same size since they were 2 and 4 and have been asked hundreds of times if they are twins, so we’ve never gotten to hand clothes down. If I find clothes on clearance, I buy them, which means there are sometimes more than one of the ’same’ item in the same size. :o)

p.s.–I only heard about Judy Rogers a couple of years ago so missed out on listening with the boys when they were young, but I’m playing ‘Why Can’t I See God?’ for my little girl. She enjoys it, and I think I’ll add another title to our CD collection for Christmas.

There were just two of us girls, growing up. But my parents bought matching 1984 Olympics shirts (at Sears Outlet) for us and them one year to wear when we went to Opryland, etc. So it was obvious we “went together”

Lisa,
Thanks for the “Celtic Cry” recommendation. That sounds like something I’d really enjoy!
I also recommend going to Judy Roger’s website and listening to some clips, then ORDERING, the CD entitled “A Cloud of Witnesses”. It’s simply beautiful. I believe (and I may be wrong) that it was done by students at Vanderbilt. “Remember Your Creator” (from the same site) is also a good one. Lori Sealy has a lovely, clear voice and many of the songs are geared toward youngsters — but not silly at all. Her version of the Apostle’s Creed is one of my favorites.
(And I second — oops, I mean “third”– the recommendation for Pilgrim’s Praise by Judy Rogers and Craig Pitman!)

Lisa,
I see that Celtic Cry has Matthew Ward singing on it. I love that man’s voice.

Cindy ~ Jamie Soles for kids is wonderful! Even the bigger kids, who moan when it comes on in the car, can sing along — under their breath, of course!

Ooh, ooh, us too! Dave and the boys also sang “Listen my Son”! How fun!

Jamie Soles was recommended to me last year (we have The Way My Story Goes) and my preschoolers have enjoyed it.
We love Judy Rogers too. I was just singing the 7 things God hates song to *myself* last night during church, as a matter of fact! (you don’t even want to know why.)

My favorite Soles CD is “Memorials”; that’s where the Reformed distinctive really shines.

Thank you so much for sharing these two wonderful musicians and artists. They are both new to me.

Regarding the side bar ESPN blog. Good job Christopher! Is he a Suns fan?? Is that what the logo means? Go Suns.

Well, speaking of Reformed music (!) I listened to The BBQ Song which you have listed in your sidebar. Now I can’t stop singing it! And I’m hungry! (BBQ is my very favorite food in the world. As far as Thanksgiving, I’m bringing the BBQ!)

Would you believe, in a strange twist of fate which included my NOT getting to go to the grocery store again today, that I am sitting here eating an Alabama BBQ sandwich with cole slaw but without any mayonnaise sauce.
And Christopher is a fan of the Suns. I didn’t know that

Your children are very stubborn. The said young man should be an Atlanta Hawks fan. Against my better judgment I have let the little fledglings choose their own teams. (BTW no gruel for Christopher this weekend)

Our Pilgrim’s Praise cassette got damaged and we haven’t replaced it with a CD yet. But we just bought Never Be Shaken this fall, and I really like it, except that the Irish-sounding bits make me think I’m listening to Celine Dion’s Titanic theme. I was going to blog about that anyway–still might.
