Wes Callihan of [1] Schola Tutorials puts out a newsletter that is always interesting and not lengthy. This month’s Cogitem section is a gem. You have to go to the Schola site and hit the newsletter button Back to Basics and then scroll down to Cogitem to read the whole thing but I think it is just what I need to hear as I plan next year.
Here is the heart of the article:
This is the heart of a good education: a small but well-chosen library, a place to sit and study, some friends to do it with, and the time and tranquility to do it in.
Tranquility. What a great word.
That is almost as good as [2] Andrew Kern’s definition of Classical education:
Classical Education
is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue by nourishing the soul on truth, goodness, and beauty by means of the liberal arts and the natural, humane, philosophical, and theological sciences.
