Wes Callihan of Schola Tutorials puts out a newsletter that is always interesting and not lengthy. This month’s Cogitem section is a gem. You have to go to the Schola site and hit the newsletter button Back to Basics and then scroll down to Cogitem to read the whole thing but I think it is just what I need to hear as I plan next year.
Here is the heart of the article:
This is the heart of a good education: a small but well-chosen library, a place to sit and study, some friends to do it with, and the time and tranquility to do it in.
Tranquility. What a great word.
That is almost as good as Andrew Kern’s definition of Classical education:
Classical Education
is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue by nourishing the soul on truth, goodness, and beauty by means of the liberal arts and the natural, humane, philosophical, and theological sciences.
If you want to read more on leisure and learning be sure to check out Willa’s post on the subject.

Cindy, when I click on the link I get a page with no newletter button or any other link.
Help!

Do you see a sidebar? It should say Scholegium Newsletter. It won’t let me link to it directly.

Wes’ site does not let you link directly to particular pages, but the newsletter link is in the sidebar. Reading those archives is a fine way to spend some time.
You have two of my favorite quotes up today, Cindy. That and Andrew’s quote that “we must educate our children from a place of rest.” Still not sure how to do that, but I keep striving for rest (and that pretty much sums up the balance, eh?)
You will take notes and write lots on the CiRCE conference this summer, right? Pretty please!
Thanks,
Diane

The page I go to has no sidebar! Not sure why.

Well, with my dd, I finally found it, by doing a google search on scholegium, which took me to Vol 1, Issue 1. We then made changes to the url, guessing which Vol/issue. Whew! What a workout! Here is the URL that got us there:

Wow, I don’t know if Cindy has fixed the link or something, but I ended up right on the article.
I enjoyed the little newsletter very much. More than anything, though, I (and a few of the children) ran outside to see the star Sirius in the southeastern sky. I’ll humble myself to admit that we’re so ignorant we were calling it Venus. (Anytime I see a really bright star I say, “Oh, that must be Venus!”

Oh, another humbling thought, Cindy. The phone number you gave me earlier today…well, I, uh…lost it.
Do you think you could email it to me, or even call again??

Cindy,
Just stopping by to say thanks for praying for me. I’ll have to wait until next week to catch up on all your interesting entries.
