Ok, the picture has nothing to do with what I want to blog about today.
I wanted to take a minute to explain our name: Dominion Family.
Over the past few months I have seen people refuting on the Internet, dominion theology.
Our family came by our name in a rather roundabout way that didn’t have a whole lot to do with dominion theology.
We were looking for a name for our lawn business. The boys had rejected my idea of “R Boys”. You know: “When it comes to your lawn R Boys are your boys.”
Finally, they got all excited about Dominion Lawns since it really covered the whole idea of taking dominion over the sphere God has placed you in. We would help families take dominion over their lawns.
Dominion was not a word that particularly belonged to a theology. It was a biblical word.
On the other hand, we are reformed and we have friends who would probably call themselves reconstructionists. But when I heard even Gary Demar speaking negatively of dominion theology I got a bit concerned about our name.
Maybe it gave people the wrong idea.
We are not theonomists. We do have books on our shelf that reflect theonomy, but we have not embraced that idea for vague and sundry reasons which I do not want to discuss on this blog.
We do not know all that dominion theology involves but we do know that our name came from our lawn business. We do believe that God has told us to take dominion over the Earth. We do have a hopeful, if confused, view of the final return of Christ.
At this time we are praying about a name change or even a blog hiatus. But in the meantime I just wanted to clear that up.
Some of you are probably scratching your head and don’t have a clue about what I am talking about. Don’t worry about it.
Some of you may have questions. Ask away…. I don’t promise I will answer
Oh, and have a happy St Nicholas’ Day. I know I will.

Happy St. Nicholas Day to you!
I thought maybe the Dominion referred in some way to “having dominion” by being “fruitful and multiplying”. The lawn business idea is much cleverer.

I don’t remember getting excited about Dominion. But I do remember how pitiful “R boys” was:-)

Happy Birthday Cindy!!! I hope you have a wonderful day. My birthday is a week from today so I’m glad to be in good December birthday company.
I have always liked Dominion Family, but then I don’t know much about dominion theolgy either.
And my vote (not that it matters) is for no blog hiatus.

Happy Birthday Cindy!! Why didn’t you tell us? You know how we love to celebrate birthdays!
Are you 39 again?
James, I like the “pitiful” R boys. I think it is very clever.
It would be a shame to have to change your name but I do understand your concern. It would also be a shame for you to take a hiatus unless of course it was a short one.
I appreciate you Cindy.

Sorry, I kinda have to agree with James about the “R Boys” thing. Glad you chose Dominion.
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Cindy, happy birthday to you! That was much better than actually having to hear me sing.

Happy Birthday Mrs. Rollins! and Happy St. Nicks day.
I have to agree with James (of course), so I’m glad you stuck with Dominion Lawns instead of “R boys”. We used to call your boys “The R boys” before we left for college, which is sorta ironic now…
Cheers!

And I thought, wow, she sure got a lot of comments on dominion theology, must be a really hot topic… Happy birthday! We’ll eat some of yesterday’s left-over birthday cake (pink, since my choice of Kahlua and chocolate was vetoed by the small birthday usurper) in your honor.

Thanks for explaining, though, now I know!

Hello Cindy!
Since it’s obviously your b-day, let me throw in a hearty Happy Birthday as well!
I’ve been meaning to comment here for awhile now… I wanted to say how much I appreciate your humility and Christlike attitude. You are truly a woman in the blogosphere that I respect.
I have to say that at first I misjudged your blog title thinking it was named for the theology.
I know this was error on my part. And I totally agree…we have been given dominion and it is a Biblical word first. I know for me though, it carries certain connotations from people who have made the theology an idol (imo) rather than a servant. I guess I’m a lil’ sensitive as I have been around these groups in the past. Not to call them “these groups” but in my mind, it is very exclusive in ideals and an extrabiblical movement.
I greatly appreciate your thoughts on VF (read in the comments section). It was an encouragement to hear what I too see as dangerous, articulated. Oh, and I LOVE your 1 Cor 2:2 sub title! I too have thought of renaming my blog b/c I feel it has an overly sarcastic tone, not reflecting my blog’s intent.
Sincerely, Kat G.
Comment by Kat (December 6, 2006 @ 10:45 pm )
Thank-you,
Kat. My subtitle has brought me up short several times and I know many times I have strayed from reflecting Christ on this blog. I tend to be sarcastic by nature also.
I was pretty sure the name had confused at least a few people
It is so hard to know when to be honest even when it is negative. I don’t always know where to draw that line.
Thank-you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday. St Nicholas Day is a fun day to have a birthday.
Comment by Cindy (December 7, 2006 @ 12:28 am )
Just wanted to say, I agree…I never know when to draw that line either. I don’t want to be negative and I am always wondering how to balance these things. What speaking the truth in love looks like in every situation.
btw, chuckled about your mall thoughts. Oh it too brings out the seat of the scornful in me!

Comment by Kat (December 7, 2006 @ 12:42 am )
There must be more to it than I assumed…I thought Dominion theology was just making up for the gnosticism that A-mils tend to have. I thought it just meant that we are to take dominion over the earth, be fruitful and multiply…live pro-actively and optimistically.
I guess I missed something!
Happy Birthday a day late, so tell us about what you did. Did you have a cake? Did your menfolk do something special for you?
Comment by Margaret in VA (December 7, 2006 @ 8:34 am )
That is what I thought also, Margaret.
I am not sure what the implications are for more than this but some people have come out very strong against it including Dave Black. Maybe he could explain it to us.

I was 20 years old when I had Cindy and it was one of the happiest days in my life when I got to hold her our first born child. WE hope you had a wonderful birthday, our lovely daughter. Cindy’s Mom
Comment by quaintoldgal (December 7, 2006 @ 2:45 pm )
I don’t guess I’ve ever heard of “dominion theology” because I assumed it meant just what Cindy said it does.
So not everyone had a bad impression.
Comment by Kelly (December 7, 2006 @ 9:55 pm )
Happy late birthday! I didn’t notice all the comments on this until just now…
I always thought that your Dominion Family title was a semi-joke based on the fact that you had so many boys…kind of like you were going to take over the world or something! But gardening is fabulous, too.
Comment by Brandy (December 8, 2006 @ 12:39 am )
Happy Birthday, Cindy!
I confess that when I first read your blog name, I thought it *did* have something to do with Dominion Theology. But it was clearly a good blog, so I kept reading, and I’m glad I did!
I know what Dominion Theology is, officially, but here in NYC “dominionist” is mostly a vague slur thrown around by people who use it along with other adjectives like “chilling” to describe anything having to do with Christians in public life. So not only is “Dominion” a definable term that is discussed or debated within some Christian circles, but it’s taken on a nebulous, popularized life of its own among people who use it to express their fear of Christians. And how can you deny something that doesn’t even have a definition?
I hope that I don’t start something by posting about the political implications of the term. I’m only reporting how I’ve heard the term used in personal conversations with friends who lean left politically. They’re probably thinking that they’re preaching to the choir anyway, and it almost seems rude to contradict them under those circumstances. But my real point is that I’m hooked on the blog anyway and don’t see any “chilling” side effects whatsoever, so thanks for the explanation!
Comment by Laura A (December 8, 2006 @ 8:31 am )
Laura,
That is why I am wondering if I should changed the name. I hate to see a word hijacked but if it has already happened maybe I need to acknowledge that.
Comment by Cindy (December 8, 2006 @ 9:48 am )
Well, this person at least looked at the content of the blog and didn’t jump to conclusions because of the name. Plus, I loved the chickadees!
I see your point about the hijacked word, but that’s totally your call. I’ll read anyway.
Comment by Laura A (December 8, 2006 @ 3:14 pm )
Dear Cindy,
Sorry to be so late with birthday wishes. I am always a day or two late with such things, unless there is a birthday child in my home who won’t let me forget! Happy birthday…I think now you and I are the same age again. Here’s to aging gracefully :-).
Re: dominion theology. Laura A is right that the word has been hijacked and made a slur, but the stubborn streak in me says to hang onto a perfectly good word and redeem it from the pagans who will twist anything good and make it sound evil. It is a perfectly fine biblical word and the meaning some wonderful ladies have ascribed to it is exactly what God meant for it to mean. He is the definer, and sinful people will always try to co-opt language for their own purposes.
Being faithful in the place God gives you to serve Him is the way to change the world, to His glory. Praise God you are doing that.
