I saw a few moths fluttering in the pantry and decided to order some moth traps. I ordered them Monday from this site and they arrived Wednesday. When we set up the traps yesterday we found out we had more than a few moths. Our whole pantry became a fluttery wonderland of moths. The little guys were beside themselves with joy. I must have gotten a bit of phermone on my hand when I set up the trap near the computer yesterday because a moth followed me around the computer keyboard yesterday afternoon.
I really need to redo our poetry notebook and our hymn books. I feel they reflect more what my older boys learned than what my little ones have done. I also thought of trying to bind our family poetry anthology. Any attractive, accessible binding ideas?
Where do I go for advice on homeschooling? The Common Room, of course. Although she didn’t know it, I have been listening to the Deputy Headmistress since my early days on the computer. She wasn’t known as the DHM back then but I won’t blow her cover.
One of the questions young mothers frequently ask older mothers is: does it get easier?
I always answer, “YES!”
But I wonder. This week my 6 oldest children are away from home and it has been pretty quiet with just the little guys. I think the little guys have gotten a bad rap.
I haven’t told anyone yet but Timothy got an early release from the Navy! That is a huge answer to our prayers. James is going to fly out to California Saturday and after a week they are going to be driving back home. I am not sure how long Timothy will be home but we can hardly wait to see him.
I got a Google hit for “what does cottleston pie mean?” Funny, I don’t know. It means hodgepodge to me. I borrowed it from Mr A A Milne.
Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie,
A fly can’t bird, but a bird can fly.
Ask me a riddle and I reply
Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie.Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie,
Why does a chicken? I don’t know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply
Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie.Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie,
A fish can’t whistle and neither can I.
Ask me a riddle and I reply
Cottleston Cottleston Cottleston Pie.— A. A. Milne

Timothy drove in Phoenix 20 years ago. He was only 2 at the time but he did hit another car
My husband got out of the car at a do-it-yourself carwash and Timothy slithered out of his booster seat, jumped in the driver’s seat, put the running engine in drive and burst forward and hit another car. His favorite saying at the time, spoken in staccato, was: “I wantta grive the car.I wannta grive the car.”
Thankfully my dh only had to shell out $75 for the other guys’s bumper.
Seriously though I will let the boys know of your offer.

Aww, I’m so glad for Timothy but it’s probably too late for him to come to visit northern CA, which is a totally different state than where he has been residing. If your boys want to head north before heading south (which is probably out of their way), let them know they are welcome to some free food and lodging here, too!

I had never had pantry moths until relatively recently. Thanks for the source to order the traps. The mention of California makes me mention that Jed and I will be flying to Sacramento on Saturday where we’ll go up to my dad’s in Redding. We’ll be driving back (I driving the U-Haul, Jed driving my dad’s mini-van). If anyone is so inclined, I would appreciate any prayers.Since we’re the only two drivers, we will be driving the whole distance ourselves (to Missouri) and it makes me a tad nervous to drive a big truck like a U-Haul.

Hi Cindy,
My friend Kathy just bound some memory work and did it through lulu (a self-publishing company). She found it was cheaper than printing it out at Staples. This might be an option for you with re-doing your poetry anthology. She reads your blog so I’ll get her to comment and tell you exactly how she did it.
Blessings,
Karen

Great news for Timothy, and you! God is so good!

Thanks y’all. God has been very good to me, I know I could have handled another year in the Navy, but I am glad I don’t have to! I’d love free food, but I don’t think highway 40 runs through Northern Ca. or Phoenix and I have some little fellows who I can’t wait to see, along with a date with the bass waters of North Bama. Thanks for the offer though. God Bless. Timothy

Oh, so you are taking the northern route. I thought maybe you’d take I-8 or I-10.
God bless and be safe.

I’ll have to check routes does the 8 or the 10 run through Phoenix? We might could swing that. Tim

I-10 goes through Phoenix and then you could go north on I-17 to Flagstaff and catch I-40 East.
Maybe I-40 is faster or more direct from CA. I don’t know.

Hi Cindy…I’m the friend of Karen who bound memory books…I did one for each of my kids, and published them through lulu.com, just for myself. I used a program called indesign, but you could use Word and export the final book to a pdf to upload to lulu. I did cover art using “The Death of Arthur”, and personalized them for each kiddo. I am very happy with the results…and they were less than $7 each. I plan to do one each year, with new Scripture/Poems/History stuff that I want them to memorize for that school year, and a section of things already committed to memory, which is a running record of all that they have memorized. It’s a “Little Grains of Sand” thing, but the total amount that they have memorized is really pretty impressive.
If this is not clear enough, let me know and I will try to explain it better.
in grace,
Kathy

Kathy,
I have been working on a Word document but I am not too happy with it. Can you explain how you used Indesign?

Here is a free offer of lodging in Texas if you take the I-40 route. We’re south of I-40 about three hours - northeast of Dallas. From here you could take I-30 through Arkansas back to I-40 or I-20 all the way to Birmingham. Our four sons will enjoy hearing Navy stories from someone other than their father.

Cindy, InDesign is a desktop publishing program by Adobe. We use it for our work on Classical Writing, but I have found many other uses for it! It is a fabulous program, but the learning curve is a bit steep. It’s great for entering text, making tables, etc.
Word is aggrevating, and very hard to use…it always wants to correct my grammar, capitalization, and spelling when I don’t want it corrected. And the numbering and bullet formatting drives me batty, since it seems to have no rhyme or reason!!
If you want to put together many documents of this kind, I recommend a desktop publishing program. There may be other desktop publishers which are simpler to use.
I could send you a pdf of one of my kids’ memory books if you would like.
I am not sure if I am answering your question, so if not, keep asking.
In grace,
Kathy
