Ok, the post some of you have been waiting for. For your weekend homeschool planning, here is the list of verses we memorized over the years. Some we review but never really remember entirely.
My philosophy has always been that my job, since I am NOT the Holy Spirit, is to give the children lots of hooks in their hearts so that when God is working on them he will have something to grab.
These are the words to hide in their hearts, and the older boys have told me that it works. They do remember God’s word when facing trials, speaking with non-Christians and other Christians, or are just in need of encouragment.
I used to tell them all this memory work was for the time when they were in prison ( for righteousness sake) and the rats were nibbling their toes. :cross:
My original goal was to memorize something from every book in the Bible, that hasn’t happened yet.
Some are very long and some very short. I don’t usually like to memorize isolated verses.

Thanks for this. Any chance you will be posting how you go about memorizing verses and other things? (Perhaps you have already posted that– I haven’t explored the whole blog yet.)

Cindy,
What version of the Bible do you use for memorization?

Jeannine,
That has been a source of confusion for us, which is why we now use the KJV. I like other versions but we have found it is better to stick to this one for memory work.
25 years ago I memorized everything from the NASB, then the college I was in switched from NASB to NIV. Tim and I weren’t totally confident with the NIV and switched back to the KJV, followed by the NKJV which then went out of publication for a while leading us to conclude it was better to stick with the KJV for memory work. Although we do use the NKJV and the Reformation Study Bible for reading.

Thanks for the info. I prefer the KJV for memory work too. The classical Christian school and our church’s Sunday school use the NIV or NKJV for memory work and the boys get mixed up sometimes because they already learned the passage in the KJV.

I had the same problem in college. The summer before my sophmore year I spent memorizing all the verses from the NASB that I knew I would need for a certain class. When I got to class the Prof said he had decided not to use the NASB but the NIV. I asked if I could go ahead with my NAS memory work but he said no. You know to this day I get those verses muddled.
