Here is an unusual hymn from the C&MA Hymns of the Christian Life, written by C&MA founder A B Simpson. We never get to sing this in a congregation anymore but it is a family favorite.
What is your favorite hymn?
HIMSELF
by A. B. Simpson
Once it was the blessing, Now it is the Lord;
Once it was the feeling, Now it is His Word.
Once His gifts I wanted, Now the Giver own;
Once I sought for healing, Now Himself alone.Chorus:
All in all forever
Jesus will I sing
Everything in Jesus
And Jesus everything.Once ’twas painful trying, Now ’tis perfect trust;
Once a half salvation, Now the uttermost.
Once ’twas ceaseless holding, Now He holds me fast;
Once ’twas constant drifting, Now my anchor’s cast.Once ’twas busy planning, Now ’tis trustful prayer;
Once ’twas anxious caring, Now He has the care.
Once ’twas what I wanted, Now what Jesus says;
Once ’twas constant asking, Now ’tis ceaseless praise.Once it was my working, His it hence shall be;
Once I tried to use Him, Now He uses me.
Once the power I wanted, Now the Mighty One;
Once for self I labored, Now for Him alone.Once I hoped in Jesus, Now I know He’s mine;
Once my lamps were dying, Now they brightly shine.
Once for death I waited, Now His coming hail;
And my hopes are anchored, Safe within the vail.

Will you accept 7 hymns I love?
1. Be Thou My Vision
2. And Can it Be
3. Come Thou Fount
4. For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
5. It Is Well With My Soul
6. Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us
7. Softly and Tenderly
I even had to limit myself. This is your blog, afterall.
Every once in a while we will sing a hymn in church and all I can hear is my precious fil singing joyfully to the Lord. He had a strong, beautiful voice and he just loved certain hymns. He left such a legacy and we have such fond memories of him, especially his hymn singing.

Choosing a favorite hymn is about like choosing a favorite book! There are so many wonderful hymns!
One of my favorites is “How Great Thou Art”.
I have never heard of the one that you mentioned today, Cindy.
Laura, who is enjoying the beautiful Alabama weather today!

Cindy, do you ever read the background story on the hymns? I would like to get one of those books that tell the story behind the hymns. I do know some of the stories such as the one behind “It is Well”.

I love the ones on Janet’s list, and also find, as I am learning them, the backround stories add such depth of meaning to the hymns. I just discovered Annie J. Flint, and blogged a blurp about her the other day. What a testimony her life was to me and so I guess right now that’s my favorite hymn “He Giveth More Grace.”

Cindy,
I guess, in a lot of ways, I’m just a little one at heart still

I agree with Laura. I can’t pick just one.
One of the current hymns I enjoy singing is Rock of Ages - All the verses!

What’s the tune to that hymn? I’m going to guess “Wye Valley.”

Valerie,
Simpson wrote the tune..himself
It is 6/8 timing with 3 flats. Yes, I am a musical nimcompoop.
Actually, it does sound very similar. I wish I could find an online midi file for you. Most of A B Simpsons songs are long on theology but short on singability.

Hi, I’m searching the written music of “HIMSELF”, because I find those words so true, but I don’t know the melody of it to sing it. Is it possible for you to send it to me or tell me where I can find it? Waiting for your answer. God bless you!
