I am making a quick trip home from the hospital. Christopher was bitten by a bug last night and ended up with a staph infection. He will be in the hospital for at least 2 days and we are hoping he doesn’t get worse and the antibiotics work. Thank-you for your prayers

Christopher is home and seems to be just fine. One funny story: As we were leaving for the emergency room on Saturday afternoon, I told Christopher to grab a book and I also grabbed a book. I picked something I had already read that would be light reading but not demand too much concentration…so did Christopher. As we sat down in the ER we each picked up our books to read. Without thinking I had picked up Dorothy Sayers’s Have His Carcase and Christopher had picked out Piet Prins’s The Grim Reaper. Not exactly encouraging ER titles.

It is a bit awkward for Southerners to celebrate Independence Day. There is nothing wrong with July 4 and the Declaration of Independence from England but it gets a little iffy after that. Tonight on the way home from the fireworks display the local radio station played 2 songs. One almost brought tears to the eyes in our car. Right after God Bless America they played Dixie. Now there’s an anthem to be proud of !!

Take your hats off !!

O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I’ll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

Let Freedom Ring.
And let all the good and the noble and the pure that the old South stood for continue to leave its mark on the new South. And let all that was ugly and brought about its ruin be condemned. And let us not confuse the two.

Yesterday my Jollyblogger T-shirt arrived and it is prime.

Thankfully, it isn’t one of those computer printout iron-on transfers but full-fledged screen printing on high quality cotton. A great shirt for a great hobby!

Today is my one year bloggin’ anniversary. If I begin clippin’ words, chalk it up to Lord Peter Wimsey. I just love that guy. My summer readin’ list is so absolutely boring that I refuse to read the books and have taken up Dorothy Sayers again. It is like a disease, really. Truly though, for those who love English, and I don’t mean GRAMMAR, Dorothy is the Queen. I would die to write like Mrs Sayers. Give me Dorothy Sayers, PG Wodehouse, GK Chesterton, and the Oxford Book of English Verse (Q edition) and I could read contentedly for the rest of my life or at least through several long Alabama summers. These writers all seem to have the gift of understandin’ the exact science of when to use a word to get the most umph out of it. Amazin’. If you have never read through the Lord Peter Wimsey series, please do quick. I am extremely jealous of all the first-time fun you will have.

Hopefully, today one of you, who won my little contest, will recieve a prize in the mail. Let me know.

And here is a link to my old blog. AOL still has it up. I remember getting 7 hits the first day and wondering who those 7 people were. I felt like I could write the rest of my life if there were 7 people to listen. A big thank-you to all 7 of you. I am off to play patty-cake in my cake.

I wanted to be clever and say, “Wisdom & the Rollins,” but then I would have had to say, “Wisdom & the Rollinses,” and I can’t bring myself to it.

The theme verse for our homeschool is Daniel 1:17a, ” As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom…” That became our verse when we only had 4 children but it still applies today. It really is a wonderful homeschool verse to remind us that all that we gain or learn comes from God.

Foremost on my mind this summer, as I plan the coming school year, is how can I impart wisdom to my children. How can I keep our life and our school days from being so full of projects, assignments, field trips and lessons that our knowledge to wisdom ratio is askew?

One area that hangs heavy is the children’s morning devotional time. How can I help them to make that time meaningful and not just completed?

It is abundantly clear to me that I am in way over my head and I am going to need some HELP.
The goals that I have for my children cannot be met by me. I can’t take a big shovel and pound these things into their heads, although I have tried. I am forced to admit that without a Helper I am unable to homeschool. Thanks be to God who has sent me a Helper, the Holy Spirit.

Charlotte Mason says that education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life. In the next few days, Lord willing, I will be writing on how our family succeeds and fails in our atmosphere, discipline and life.
